This week, Sam researched Yoko Ono, and finally answers the question of whether she broke up the Beatles (spoilers: she didn't!).
Yoko Ono's life was rarely easy. She was in Tokyo during the bombing of Japan in WWII, and her family was forced to beg for food. She later lost a daughter and husband to a Christian Japanese Cult. John Lennon was killed in front of her. And on top of all of that, she was vilified in the press. Despite everything, she's managed to continue creating artwork and contributing to charitable causes, usually pushing for global peacekeeping efforts. She's performed her unique brand of avant-garde around the globe, including at Carnegie Hall, doing shows in both English and Japanese.
Check out the full episode to learn more about why Yoko Ono is a Broad You Should Know!

This week, Chloe brings us the story of not one... not two... but THREE broads you should know, and they're together in this episode because they all have one thing in common: they were indestructible.
Joy Andrew is likely turning 100 this year. And one thing's for sure—it was not an easy journey. She was almost assassinated. Her plane crashed into the desert. She beat COVID. And that's not even the whole story!
Check out the episode to hear about Joy, Margery, & Richmodis, why they were indestructible, and why they're most definitely Broads You Should Know.

Here, she talks about her decision to come out as transgender, how quarantine played a role, and how things have changed since "going public."
Then, Sara, Sam, & Chloe discuss some of the tv shows that have been helping them get through quarantine, including Pose, Sense8, Alone, The West Wing, and more!

This week, Sara tells us about Frida Kahlo — the Mexico-born painter and revolutionary whose tragic backstory adds depth to her work.
Frida originally wanted to be a doctor, but a bus accident left her broken and bedridden for an extended period of time. While she was confined to her room, she began painting self-portraits and developing her own unique style. After impressing muralist Diego Rivera with her work, they were married and Frida began traveling the world with him and developing a reputation of her own.

Annie Edson Taylor — Went Over Niagara Falls in a Barrel [Sam Eggers]
Wednesday Jul 22, 2020
Wednesday Jul 22, 2020
This week, Sam tells us a tale as old as time... or at least as old as the 63-year-old woman who survived a trip over Niagara Falls in a barrel!
The schoolteacher recognized that daredevil feats were all the rage, and her work as a schoolteacher at Charm School wasn't quick paying the bills. She hatched a scheme to deliberately go over the Falls in a barrel—one that she designed herself—on her 63rd Birthday.
Was she successful in getting rich quick? Was there any fallout (ha) from her decision? Check out the episode to hear the full tale of Annie Edson Taylor!

This week, Sara teaches us about Ella Jo Baker, the woman who worked tirelessly behind the scenes of the Civil Rights Movement as a recruiter & organizer.
Ella's biggest push was to empower people to control their own activism, rather than looking to leaders to tell them what to do. She was critical of the Civil Rights movement's reliance on the Black church and on solitary male voices rather than community engagement. Check out the episode to learn more about her — and why she was critical of Martin Luther King Jr.'s role in Civil Rights.

Melina comes from a long line of revolutionaries, and is no stranger to fighting against institutional racism & police brutality. She attends the Police Commission hearings weekly and stays up-to-date on whether there have been any murders by police. Recently, she's been in the news a lot (as well as in a number of popular documentaries about Black history) for her advocacy of "The People's Budget" in Los Angeles, and for her vocal support of the Black Lives Matter protests (and subsequent BLM uprising) in the wake of George Floyd's murder.
Check out the episode to hear more, including the story of a wrongful arrest which mysteriously turned into 8 misdemeanor charges against her.
