Wednesday Jan 29, 2020
Wednesday Jan 29, 2020
This week, Chloe brings us the story of Sarah Goode: Born into slavery, she thrived after Emancipation, moving to Chicago and starting her own furniture business. Upon receiving complaints from customers that their apartments were too small to fit their beds into, she invented a solution.
EDITOR'S NOTE: In the podcast, Chloe mistakenly says that it is unknown what happened to Sarah Goode. In truth, she died in Chicago in 1905 at the age of 50.

Wednesday Jan 08, 2020
This week, Sam teaches Sara & Chloe more than ever knew about the one and only Eartha Kitt!
As a mixed-race child born in 1927, she suffered greatly in her early years due to racism from both whites and blacks. Her own mother was cruel to her, and their family had trouble finding a place to live because no one wanted a "yellow" child in the neighborhood. From there, however, Eartha overcame. She joined a dance school that brought her to Europe. There, she developed one-woman shows which eventually led to meeting Orson Welles and a film career. The story only gets more interesting from there, involving US Presidents, being blacklisted, and a quest to discover who her real father was. Learn about all of that and more on this week's Broads You Should Know!

Betsy Ross — Designer of the first American Flag
Wednesday Jan 01, 2020
Wednesday Jan 01, 2020
Happy New Year! To celebrate, Sara talks about a woman born on January 1st: the one and only Betsy Ross!
You may already know that Betsy Ross designed the first American Flag. But did you know that she increased sewing efficiency by switching from a 6-pointed star to a 5-pointed star, making it possible to create the stars with a single snip? Or that she was disowned by her Quaker family for marrying a man who was non-Quaker? Her life surrounding the creation of the flag was rife with tragedy, making her even more of a Broad You Should Know.

Wednesday Dec 25, 2019
This week on Broads You Should Know, Sara schools Sam & Chloe about Fatima Al-Fihri (or Al-Fihriya, depending on your source), the woman who founded the world's first-ever University in Fes, Morocco. Not only did she build it, but she was there every step during construction, overseeing the project to make sure that everything was exactly to her specifications. The University, al-Qarawiyyin, is still standing today and features some of the oldest surviving texts in its library, including the original documents of the prophet Muhammad.

Mileva Maric — The physicist who co-wrote Einstein’s theories
Wednesday Dec 18, 2019
Wednesday Dec 18, 2019
This week on Broads You Should Know, Chloe talks to Sam & Sara about physicist Mileva Maric, Einstein's first wife who worked with him on the Theory of Relativity (and the other papers he is best known for) but received no credit for her work. There is contention amongst certain segments of scholars who believe that she couldn't have helped in any way, but we looked up her school records, letters Einstein wrote to her, and other evidence that seems to strongly imply that Mileva was a vital piece of the puzzle. Listen to the episode to learn more, and to hear both sides of the argument about Mileva Maric's contributions to physics.

Sacagawea — Navigator, translator, & mother during Lewis & Clark expedition
Wednesday Dec 11, 2019
Wednesday Dec 11, 2019
This week on Broads You Should Know, Sam does a deep dive in teaching Sara & Chloe about Sacagawea. Best known as the navigator during Lewis & Clark's expedition of the Louisiana Purchase, the truth is a bit more complicated than that. She was kidnapped and sold into slavery as a young girl, and was brought on the journey by her husband/owner. She played the role of navigator at some points, but she also had never been to most of the land they were exploring and had never seen the ocean. She was mostly needed for her ability to translate and so that Native American tribes they encountered would trust the white men and believe they were peaceful. Listen to the episode to learn more about Sacagawea and the truth about white male exploration of North America.

This week on Broads You Should Know, Sara teaches Sam & Chloe about Tuira: the warrior woman from the Kayapo tribe in the Amazon rainforest who stood up to the world bank and stopped a dam from being built in 1989. The story has a few twists and turns, but the world will always remember the sight of the bare-chested woman who shoved a machete into a man's face at a press conference in Brazil.
