This week, Sam brings us the story of Bessie Coleman, the world-famous stunt pilot!
Bessie Coleman dreamed of being a pilot, but there were no flight schools in the United States that accepted female pilots—let alone black & native women. Eventually, a Chicago newspaper published an article about her dreams, and her schooling was bankrolled by fellow community members who wanted to see her live her dream. She went to Europe and earned a pilot's license—and some notoriety—before coming back to the states. Check out the episode to hear more about her incredible journey!

This week, Chloe brings us the story of Caroline Herschel, a government-appointed Astronomer who created a system of cataloguing stars and stellar objects that we still use today!
Despite contracting typhus, which stunted her growth and blinded her in one eye, Caroline was determined to do more with her life than be a domestic worker — the only job which her mother said she'd be capable. After becoming a successful singer and musician, her career was cut short when her brother (and the conductor of the music she sang) developed a new hobby: building homemade telescopes to view the stars. Eventually Caroline fell in love with the cosmos as well, and history was forever changed.
Check out the episode to learn more about the life and accomplishments of Caroline Herschel! She's definitely a Broad you'll want to know.

This week, Sam brings us the story of Mother Teresa! Despite having been sainted, Mother Teresa remains a controversial figure in different sectors of the world.
When she was 12, she heard "The Call" that she was to become a nun. Later, she heard "the call within the call," which prompted her to press against her superiors within the church to allow her to live on the streets so that she could better understand the struggle of those she was trying to help: those most in need. She rescued children, provided last rites to countless people, and traveled the world with her mission.
So why the controversy? Check out the episode to hear what some of her most vocal critics thought, and then Sara, Justin, & Sam debate whether Mother Teresa is, in fact, a Broad You Should Know.

This week, Sara brings us the story of Ida B. Wells! She worked in Civil Rights all her life, early on suing (and winning!) a railroad company for forcing her to vacate her seat so that white people could sit down. She's also the woman who ventured into the Southern states during a time of mass-lynchings to investigate the epidemic of unreported hate crimes. Her work made people in the Northern United States aware that the hate crimes were happening, and that they were targeting successful black businesspeople under the guise of various made-up charges.

This week, Chloe brings us the story of Jennifer Nelson: the documentary filmmaker who sued Warner Chappell over their claim of ownership over the song "Happy Birthday."
Jennifer Nelson was working on My Super Sweet 16 when she decided to make a documentary about the origin of the song Happy Birthday. When she discovered that The Hill Sisters in Kentucky had written the song in the 1800s, but Warner hadn't filed a copyright claim until 1935, it seemed odd that she had to pay Warner Chappell to use a song she knew they hadn't paid the Hills for. What started as a documentary became a campaign to free the song from a company that was making $2M a year on royalties.

This week, Sam brings us the story of the woman who single-handedly reshaped an industry while taking down another: Ida Tarbell!
Ida was one of the first investigative journalists. She imposed strict rules upon herself that became the standard for the type of journalism we see today, things like: 1) Off the record, 2) Never betray your source, & 3) Never accept gifts from an interview subject. While researching Abraham Lincoln, she was one of the first reporters to track down old friends and neighbors to get the subject's life story starting in childhood. Without her, reporting would look a whole lot different, and that's why we think she's a broad you should know.

This week, Chloe brings us the story of a woman who not only won the Nobel Prize for founding a movement that planted over 20 MILLION trees worldwide, but also brought Democracy to Kenya... but it took nearly her entire life to do it.
After earning her doctorate, she first got involved as an activist for Women's rights and politics. After an unfounded scandal brought forth from her ex husband, she lost her job, her home, and had to start again. The story is filled with tragedy but ultimately ends in an uplifiting message to never, ever give up. Wangari is an inspiration to many, and is absolutely a broad you owe it to yourself to get to know.

This week, Sam brings us the story of a woman who received a Medal of Honor for her work during the US Civil War: Mary Edwards Walker!
Born to "free thinking" parents in Upstate New York, Mary was taught to question gender roles from a very early age. She became active in a quest to make it socially acceptable for women to wear slacks instead of dresses, both for patriarchal and hygienic reasons. She went on to become a surgeon, and when the Civil War broke out in 1861, she volunteered her services to the Union army. As a female, she was rejected from serving, but was "permitted" to be an unpaid volunteer. There's a lot more to the story, so check out the episode to hear the riveting tale of Mary Edwards Walker!
