This week, we're doing things just a little bit differently, as Sara brings us the story of not one, but over a half dozen women who are doing their part to fight COVID-19, aka the Coronavirus!
There has been so much terrifying information (and misinformation) about the illness that's spreading across the globe, so we wanted to do our part and spread some news on the positive side: Across the planet, scientists, doctors, researchers, & policymakers and working together to pool resources & information so that we can fight the contagion. While you're trapped inside on quarantine, if you're going to be searching for news on the virus, at least try to make it something hopeful.
Stay safe, stay sane, and take care of yourselves.

Hua Mulan — The (Possibly Fictional) Legend Who Inspired A Nation For Centuries
Wednesday Mar 25, 2020
Wednesday Mar 25, 2020
This week, Sara brings us the story of the woman who went to battle in her father's place and inspired China for generations: Hua Mulan!
Because there have been so many different versions of Mulan's story, Sara looked up three of the OG stories that featured her and breaks them down. Whether she was fictional or not, the story of a woman electing to go to war in her father's place in a time when women were not allowed to fight is one that has inspired people for centuries, and we think that makes her a broad you should know!

This week, Sam brings us the story of the first female Prime Minister of India: Indira Gandhi!
Politically active from a very young age, Indira originally focused her efforts as PM on helping the poorest citizens of the recently formed nation of India. After war in Pakistan led to the creation of an independent Bangladesh, an immigration crisis led to food shortages and overpopulation issues that meant Indira made some truly devastating decisions. Her story is rife with contradictions, but as a woman who lived by her own rules and helped to shape our modern world, she's a Broad you should know.

Irena Sendler — Responsible for Saving 2,500 Children During the Holocaust
Wednesday Mar 11, 2020
Wednesday Mar 11, 2020
This week, Chloe brings us the story of Irena Sendler, the Polish social worker who conspired against the Nazi regime to smuggle children and babies out of the Warsaw Ghetto during the German occupation. Irena was a vocal critic of anti-semitism throughout her life, to the point where she was refused work opportunities because her University labelled her a "philo-semite," or Jew-Lover. The label didn't stop her or hold her back, because before the war was over, she was responsible for saving the lives of 2,500 children.

Happy Black History Month from Broads You Should Know!
This week, Chloe brings us the story of Mary McLeod Bethune! Born shortly after Emancipation, her family worked to buy the cotton farm they'd worked as slaves. Mary attempted to become a Missionary, but no church would accept her, and she ended up founding a University instead. After women got the right to vote, she organized voter registration drives. Her organizational skills caught the eye of the Roosevelt administration, and she became close personal friends with Eleanor Roosevelt. She helped pave the way for women to join the army, and served as Vice President of the NAACP until her death. If you don't know Mary McLeod Bethune, her story will amaze you.

This week, Sara brings us the story of Stagecoach Mary! Born Mary Fields (and a slave), Mary made a name for herself first by working her way up the Mississippi until she worked for 15 years at a convent. After drawing her gun on a janitor who slapped her across the face, she was fired and made her way west to accept a job as a "Star Carrier" for the USPS. There, she was known to drink heavily, fight off wolves, defeat bandits, & was absolutely beloved by everyone in her town.

Wednesday Feb 12, 2020
Wednesday Feb 12, 2020
This week, Sara brings us the story of Marsha P. Johnson! Marsha self identified as a gay queen, but she's a Broad in our book! Marsha was allegedly at the forefront of the Stonewall riot that started the LGBT revolution, helped organize the first Pride Parade, and founded STAR house, a home for abandoned or homeless LGBT children and young adults to keep them off the streets (which helped inspire the FX show "Pose"!).

After years of hard work, she founded the National Domestic Worker's Union in Atlanta, which caught the attention of the Nixon Administration. She was also extremely involved politically, registering thousands of African Americans to vote, and fighting alongside Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights movement (they were neighbors).
