Annie ”Londonderry” - The First Woman to Circumnavigate the World on a Bicycle
Wednesday Sep 13, 2023
Wednesday Sep 13, 2023
Annie Cohen Kopchovsky is already struggling under the weight of patriarchy when two arrogant gentlemen wage a bet that a woman cannot possibly be as physically capable as a man nor able to care for herself as a man can. The wager? $10,000 if Annie can circumnavigate the world in less than 15 months and raise $5,000 in the process.
Eager to prove those "gentlemen" wrong, Annie jumps at the chance, and leaves her family behind for the bike trail - the only problem? She's never ridden a bicycle before! How on earth will she get around the entire world with just her 42lb bike, a skirt and corset, one change of clothes and a pearl-handled revolver? You'll have to listen to find out!

Lucy Parsons — Anarchist Leader of the Labor Party and Advocate for Workers’ Rights
Wednesday Sep 06, 2023
Wednesday Sep 06, 2023
This week, Sara researched Lucy Parsons, and enlightens all us Broads as to the history of the Labor Party & Anarchist Movement in the US in the early 20th Century!
Lucy Parsons fought her entire life for workers' rights. She was possibly born a slave, but claims not to be Black at all. Still, she is considered by many to be one of the most important figures in the Labor Movement throughout 20th Century America. She was considered by the FBI and various government agencies to be "more dangerous than 100 rioters" due to her skill as an orator to unite people behind a common goal.
She and her husband Albert Parsons were both a part of the Haymarket Riot, for which Albert was hanged, despite later evidence revealing him to be innocent.
Check out the full episode to learn more about what Lucy Parsons accomplished during her life, and why she is a Broad You Should Know!

Loyda Martinez - Fighting for the Rights of Los Alamos, NM
Wednesday Aug 30, 2023
Wednesday Aug 30, 2023
Last week we dove into the history of the land and the hispanos who lived in Los Alamos when the government and Oppenheimer came to town - that’s right the land was not “unoccupied”, as the movie would have us believe. Hundreds of native ranchers and their families were forced off their lands and their livelihoods, and subsequently had no choice but to work at the labs.
TODAY, in part two, best-selling author and award-winning journalist Alisa Lynn Valdés brings us the story of LOYDA MARTINEZ. Loyda’s father was one of the men that was forced off his land and who worked in the labs where him and his fellow locals were not given protective gear, despite the fact that they were working with highly poisonous beryllium. Loyda, who worked at the lab herself, ends up becoming a kind of whistleblower about these real goings on, and for most of her life she’s been fighting tooth and nail for the men and women that worked at the labs not only for recompense from the initial damage but also for better pay and benefits for the employees that suffered at the labs for so long.
With Alisa's permission, we bring you her episode "The Other Los Alamos Part 2 - Loyda Martinez", from her podcast CHINGONA HISTORY - uncovering the extraordinary and often overlooked stories of Latinas who shaped United States History. Alisa Lynn Valdés - Telling the REAL Story of What Happened in Los Alamos, NM
Wednesday Aug 23, 2023
Wednesday Aug 23, 2023
Best-selling author and award-winning journalist Alisa Lynn Valdés made international headlines a few weeks ago when her Twitter thread about the REAL story of what happened in Los Alamos went viral. Unlike Christopher Nolan's new film Oppenheimer suggests - the land that the Los Alamos Labs was built on and the area the first bombs were tested on were NOT "uninhabited" - the people living there had been there for centuries, and in a (not) shocking turn of events, they were NOT treated kindly the by the US Government and Oppenheimer's crews.
With Alisa's permission, we bring you her episode THE OTHER LOS ALAMOS Part 1, from her podcast CHINGONA HISTORY - uncovering the extraordinary and often overlooked stories of Latinas who shaped United States History. Ruth Handler - The Mother of Barbie
Wednesday Aug 16, 2023
Wednesday Aug 16, 2023
Ruth (Moskowicz) Handler was born the 10th child to a family of immigrants and from the get-go she was a hard working Broad jumping quickly from the local soda fountain to Paramount Pictures in Los Angeles. Her boyfriend Elliott was quick to follow, and soon enough they tie the knot, a partnership that would prove to be a huge success in both the personal and corporate worlds.
How did Ruth originally conceive of the idea of Barbie? How did she influence Barbie's design and development as the line continued? And more importantly - how did Ruth's savvy marketing genius push Barbie and Mattel into the #1 toy manufacturer spot? Oh yeah - and what's the story behind the "trouble with the IRS" that was mentioned in the movie?
Well - you'll have to listen to find out!

Sara welcomes back guests Chloe Skye and Zach Livingston to gush over and analyze the new Greta Gerwig Barbie Movie and the way that the world is reacting to it!
We daresay NEVER in the history of blockbuster filmmaking, has a film so well articulated the damage that patriarchy inflicts on EVERY PERSON it touches (yes, it's bad for Kens, too!), and so precisely defined the challenges ALL women face in balancing the contradictory expectations inflicted on us by patriarchy (truly masterful work, America Ferrera!).
And GUESS WHAT? Despite what the haters are saying, this movie is NOT just for women! The journey that Ken, and all the Kens go through is freaking phenomenal, and from the mouth of Zach (our personal Ken) it's a powerful message that all men need to hear!
Pull up a chair for this deep dive armchair analysis of probably the best movie of the year and certainly one of our personal favs of all time.
**SPOILER ALERT** If you haven't seen the movie yet and don't want anything spoiled, PRESS PAUSE and come back to listen once you've seen it because we definitely sort through all the nuts and bolts of the story in this episode.

Why isn't there another new Broad for you today? What in the world has been going on with Broads You Should Know the past few weeks?!
The short answer: JURY DUTY. Sara was held captive by the "Justice" System, and now that the case is over she can finally tell all about what it was like to be on a Jury, and why she's feeling pretty messed up about it.
BUT FIRST! We preview all the great new Broads episodes we've got coming down the pipeline including our own "Barbenheimer" with some of your favorite past pod guests, including a special on the mother of Barbie, Ruth Handler, and the truth about what really happened at Los Alamos and the Broad who has been fighting to protect those indigenous lives that were ruined by Oppenheimer's project. There's even more to be excited about in the coming weeks and months, so give it a listen and then come back next week for another Broad You Should Know!

Helen Hulick Beebe — Slacks-tivist & Innovator in Deaf Education
Wednesday Jul 26, 2023
Wednesday Jul 26, 2023
Sara has been stuck in Jury Duty (where she's forbidden to act out in any way) so it's a great excuse to revisit our episode about Helen Hulick Beebe - the woman who DARED to wear pants to the courthouse in defiance of the judge...
Helen Hulick Beebe is working as a teacher in Los Angeles in 1938, and when she's called to court to testify in a burglary case she inadvertently causes quite the ruckus by...wearing pants! The Judge is outraged and reschedules the court date with an order to wear a dress when she returns, but Helen refuses to comply and the ire of the Judge boils over. The whole ordeal that follows lasts months and makes headlines across the country, putting Helen and her "slacks-tivism" into the spotlight.
However, her story doesn't end there. Helen goes on to pioneer a new method of teaching for deaf students. Known today as the auditory-verbal approach, her method has opened the door for hearing impaired students and their families, making it possible to interact with the hearing world at a level that was previously impossible.
How did Helen's battle against the pants-hating Judge ultimately play out? And how did she chart a pathway to develop, then expand the auditory-verbal approach? You'll have to listen to find out!

We just passed her birthday on June 6th, so it's a great time to revisit our episode on Frida Kahlo — the Mexico-born painter and revolutionary whose tragic backstory adds depth to her work.
Frida originally wanted to be a doctor, but a bus accident left her broken and bedridden for an extended period of time. While she was confined to her room, she began painting self-portraits and developing her own unique style. After impressing muralist Diego Rivera with her work, they were married and Frida began traveling the world with him and developing a reputation of her own.
Check out the episode to learn more about Frida Kahlo, her life story, and the passion & emotions that drove her work.
