Michelle Yeoh — Greatest Action Heroine of All Time
Wednesday Apr 20, 2022
Wednesday Apr 20, 2022
This week, guest Adrian Snow brings us one of the greatest actor Broads of the 21st Century - Michelle Yeoh!
Whether you just saw her new film Everything Everywhere All at Once (Adrian & Sara's MUST SEE movie of the year!!), watched her dazzle in Crazy Rich Asians, kiss James Bond, or serve up crazy stunts with Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh brings talent, class, and straight up badassery to every role she tackles.
As Adrian tells us, though, her road to being dubbed "The Greatest Action Heroine of All Time" and "50 Most Beautiful People in the World" was not an easy one. It's filled with career changes, injuries, hiatuses and nearly quitting altogether until one of the most unlikeliest people tells her exactly what she needed to hear.
Who was it and what did they say to her? You'll have to listen to find out!

Constance Baker Motley — Lawyer, Judge, and ”Civil Rights Queen”
Wednesday Apr 13, 2022
Wednesday Apr 13, 2022
This week, Sara brings us Constance Baker Motley - The first black woman to try a case before the Supreme Court, to serve in the NY Senate, to be elected Manhattan Borough President, to be appointed to a Federal Judgeship and to be promoted to Chief Judge.
This powerhouse Broad was the role model for many of today's most prominent women of color in the Judiciary branch including Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson and Vice President Kamala Harris, and it's NO WONDER! Constance not only wrote the brief for Brown vs. Board of Education, she also represented clients in almost all of the most prominent desegregation, fair housing, and other civil rights cases of the time, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. after his arrest in Birmingham, winning 9 of the 10 cases she took to the Supreme Court. She is definitively a BROAD YOU SHOULD KNOW!

Artemisia Gentileschi — Baroque Painter Extraordinaire [Sara Gorsky]
Wednesday Apr 06, 2022
Wednesday Apr 06, 2022
This week, Sara brings us the incomparable Italian painter Artemisia Gentileschi! She is considered one of the foremost painters of the 17th century, eclipsing her father's skill and considered more brazen than Caravaggio himself.
Due to her own exceptional skill and brilliant business tactics, Artemisia's popularity exploded and she painted commissions for the most elite patrons across all of Europe, becoming so successful she didn't even "need a husband" anymore. However, much of her life and success was overshadowed by her sexual assault at 17 years old and the public trial that followed. Much of her work reflects that brutal experience, too.
Artemisia and her work has recently come back into the spotlight in the wake of the #metoo movement; Her paintings have become emblematic of the strong, powerful woman in the face of the violence inflected upon her. Her story is one of great independent success despite the odds and she is most definitely a BROAD You Should Know!

Edith Loeber Ballard, M.D. — First Female Surgeon in the Southern US [Elise Ballard]
Wednesday Mar 30, 2022
Wednesday Mar 30, 2022
This week, Elise Ballard brings us the tale of Edith Loeber Ballard, M.D.! Despite a very successful debut, Edith Loeber was not content to simply marry well. However, after completing medical school up North, she and a group of seven other women doctors found themselves unable to secure positions at New Orleans hospitals - because they were women, of course.
Instead of accepting defeat, these trailblazers combined forces to raise funds and create the New Orleans Dispensary for Women and Children - the first hospital of its kind in Louisiana and all the South. They served the poorest folks in the most need of medical care, and for FREE. They also became the first female doctors and surgeons in the entire South. Their work didn't stop there, though. Listen now to find out the full story!

Wednesday Mar 23, 2022
Wednesday Mar 23, 2022
This week, Michael Kuciak brings us the tale of Daria Nicolodi! Daria knew from a young age she was going to be a brilliant actor and her success in Italian television led her to be cast in a film that would become a foundational masterpiece of horror cinema: Deep Red (Profondo Rosso).
Her work on the film went far beyond the strong, sassy journalist she played; She also helped develop the production design, catapulting the film's success as well as the careers of her and director Dario Argento. Her stellar talent and whip smart intellect profoundly changed the horror genre, and film industry at large.

The Invisible Battalion — The Female Soldiers of the Ukrainian Army [Sara Gorsky]
Wednesday Mar 16, 2022
Wednesday Mar 16, 2022
This week, Sara sheds some light on The Invisible Battalion! While Ukrainian women have been defending their country on the front lines for decades, it wasn't until 2018 that they were actually allowed to serve in combat ranks, thanks, in large part, to a massive campaign known as "The Invisible Battalion," led by the NGO Institute of Gender Programs (invisiblebattalion.org). The women leading this movement have opened the door for Ukrainian women's rights, and their powerful campaign also gives us a stark and heartbreaking window into the war Ukrainians have been fighting to keep their homeland since 2014.

reBROADcast: Olga of Kyiv - The OG Boss Queen of Ukraine
Wednesday Mar 09, 2022
Wednesday Mar 09, 2022
This week, Sara brings back the story of Olga of Kyiv: The Viking Warrior Queen who orchestrated one of the most prolonged, bloody revenge strategies of all time before expanding trade (putting the Kyivan Rus on the map), tricking Emperor Constantine VII, converting to Christianity and spreading the faith so successfully that she was canonized the Patron Saint of Widows and Converts.
This is the OG Boss Queen of Ukraine and her story is so epic that it served as a basis for some of your favorite moments on Game of Thrones. If you haven't heard of Olga, or even if you remember her from when this episode first aired in 2020, listen again and be transported to one of the most spectacular origin stories of Ukraine.

Wednesday Mar 02, 2022
This week, Chloe Skye returns to bring us the story of Beate Gordon! When Beate's Ukrainian-born Jewish parents fled Russia in the 1920's, eventually landing in Japan, Beate fell in love with the Japanese people and culture, but WWII leaves Beate in the US, separated from her parents and unable to contact them. Beate uses her incredible ployglot skills to become a translator, eventually working her way onto Douglas MacArthur's team and to the very table where his team was writing the new Japanese Constitution and Beate, of all people, became responsible for the future of all Japanese women.
Her story is astonishing, and her impact on the women of Japan cannot be understated. How the heck did she meet MacArthur and become a feminist leader in Japan? And did she ever find her parents?? You'll have to listen to find out!

Wednesday Feb 23, 2022
Wednesday Feb 23, 2022
This week, Sara covers an essential Broad from the Civil Rights Era - Myrlie Evers! You might have seen her delivering the invocation at President Obama's second inauguration, but do you know her story? Her and her husband Medgar opened and ran the first NAACP office in Mississippi, organized protests, and ran campaigns for everything from voting rights and desegregation, to fair trials for the perpetrators of hate crimes, but when tragedy strikes, suddenly Myrlie is flung into the national spotlight. Hers is a story you won't want to miss and an essential part of civil rights history.
