This week, Sam brings us the story of Mother Teresa! Despite having been sainted, Mother Teresa remains a controversial figure in different sectors of the world.
When she was 12, she heard "The Call" that she was to become a nun. Later, she heard "the call within the call," which prompted her to press against her superiors within the church to allow her to live on the streets so that she could better understand the struggle of those she was trying to help: those most in need. She rescued children, provided last rites to countless people, and traveled the world with her mission.
So why the controversy? Check out the episode to hear what some of her most vocal critics thought, and then Sara, Chloe, & Sam debate whether Mother Teresa is, in fact, a Broad You Should Know.

Marion Stokes — Secretly Archived 35 Years of TV [Sara Gorsky]
Wednesday Aug 24, 2022
Wednesday Aug 24, 2022
This week, Sara brings us the somewhat strange, but true story of Marion Stokes. A card carrying member of the Communist party, Marion was one of the most intelligent and articulate voices on local television in Philadelphia in the late 1960s, where she also happened to learn the power television carried across the airwaves, and the great influence producers had over the content and messages being broadcast.
Then, in 1979 when the Iranian hostage crisis dominated airwaves and established the 24/7 news cycle, Marion decided that someone had to archive it all, and she hit the record button on her VCR and betamax players. Her players don't stop recording until 35 years later, when she breathes her last.
She recorded over 71,000 tapes worth of television, and bought hundreds of thousands of newspapers, magazines, books, and even Apple computers. Was she a genius? Was hers a mission of madness? Listen now to the incredible true story of Marion Stokes.

Wednesday Aug 17, 2022
This week, guest Darren Callahan brings us the story of screenwriter Nancy Dowd! After graduating from Smith College, Nancy enrolls at UCLA determined to forge a career writing for film. Not only does she succeed, she ends up writing some of the most renowned films of the 70s and 80s, and even winning an Oscar for her first feature script COMING HOME, but while the original script was entirely her own, she had to share that Oscar with two other writers.
Listen now to find out how that film created a rift between her and Jane Fonda that would last a lifetime, and why much of her writing since has been credited under pseudonyms, and sometimes even uncredited!

This week Sara brings us the story of the remarkable Olivia Julianna! A week and a half ago Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz got on the mic and fat-shamed the 19-year-old political strategist for Gen Z for Change, a youth-led nonprofit creating tangible change on issues that disproportionately effect young people.
Olivia used this mega-spotlight to flip the narrative and raise money for Abortion Funds. At the time this episode drops she has raised over $2.2 million and trolled Gaetz to the moon and back and she's not done yet. Listen now for the full story on how this teenaged Broad is changing the world.

Wednesday Jul 27, 2022
Wednesday Jul 27, 2022

She is only 16 years old when she competes in her first Olympic Games as an amateur athlete. A mere four years later, at 20, she wins three golds and is declared "the Fastest Woman in History." Her story is even more incredible when you find out that as a young child and polio survivor doctors told her she would never walk again.

This week, Sara brings us the story of Ida B. Wells! She worked in Civil Rights all her life, early on suing (and winning!) against a railroad company for forcing her to vacate her seat so that white people could sit down. She's also the woman who ventured into the Southern states during a time of mass-lynchings to investigate the epidemic of unreported hate crimes. Her work made people in the Northern United States aware of the vicious hate crimes that were happening, and that they were targeting successful black businesspeople under the guise of various made-up charges.

Helen Hulick Beebe — Slacks-tivist & Innovator in Deaf Education [Sara Gorsky]
Wednesday Jul 13, 2022
Wednesday Jul 13, 2022
Today, Sara brings us the incredible story of Helen Hulick Beebe! Helen is working as a teacher in Los Angeles in 1938, and when she's called to court to testify in a burglary case she inadvertently causes quite the ruckus by...wearing pants! The Judge is outraged and reschedules the court date with an order to wear a dress when she returns, but Helen refuses to comply and the ire of the Judge boils over. The whole ordeal that follows lasts months and makes headlines across the country, putting Helen and her "slacks-tivism" into the spotlight.
However, her story doesn't end there. Helen goes on to pioneer a new method of teaching for deaf students. Known today as the auditory-verbal approach, her method has opened the door for hearing impaired students and their families, making it possible to interact with the hearing world at a level that was previously impossible.
How did Helen's battle against the pants-hating Judge ultimately play out? And how did she chart a pathway to develop, then expand the auditory-verbal approach? You'll have to listen to find out!

Today, Colin A. Borden brings us the tale of Verity Lambert - the founding producer of Doctor Who!
As an aspiring young writer and director, Verity kept running into the glass ceiling, being told time and time again that there wasn't any more room for another woman.
Verity kept at it, though, and when an accident on set means someone has to step in to keep the show together, Verity meets the challenge with aplomb and leaves an indelible impression on the studio department head. Later, when he's looking for someone to try and get a weird show called "Doctor Who" on its feet, he remembers Verity, and she becomes both the first UK female TV producer, and the youngest at the time.
Her story is amazing, and this now beloved TV show is a staple in many a home, but it wouldn't have even happened were it not for the tenacious, creative, and get-it-done attitude of Verity Lambert. Listen now for the full story!

Sara, Chloe, and much of the US are reeling this week from the Supreme Court ruling that overturned Roe vs Wade (while disturbingly, some are celebrating). While we much expected it would happen, it still was a major blow.
As we sort through the sorrow, grief and despair that many of us are feeling it's important to acknowledge our feelings, but also to check in with our actions and make sure that we aren't inadvertently self-centering/white-centering our posts and our actions.
We discuss a few important ally faux pas you should be aware of, and highlight the best, most productive ways to focus our energy and support for the folks most effected by this ruling. SPOILER ALERT: There are already really amazing organizations that have been supporting those seeking abortions for decades now!!
